Solitaire Engagement Rings…

I love solitaires as a choice for an engagement ring, simple, elegant and timeless…

This is a recent one I finished just after Christmas.

Ronan Campbell Yellow & White gold Six Claw Diamond Solitaire Engagement Ring Designyard dublin Ireland

I always approach solitaires with the diamond first, it is the most important part of the piece so the stone has to be exceptional. I only use GIA certified diamonds for my pieces and picking the right stone is the hardest part, as most clients want value and size my main job is to find the perfect balance.

The majority of people looking for a diamond engagement ring are familiar with the 4 c’s cut, colour, clarity and carat weight. Armed with this information lots of couples research online and find opinions on different threads but this I have found can (not always) lead to buying a stone I would never even present to someone to view regardless of its 4 c’s.

If I had a euro or a dollar for every diamond I was asked to value which on paper had a respectable set of 4 c’s but I would not sell I would be a very rich man!

An example of this is a stone that came across my desk recently purchased from a large diamond selling website which a client asked me to set. The stone was GIA certified and had an SI1 clarity grade which generally would be ok and within the parameters I work (Flawless – SI2). However as I studied the stone in front of the client and I asked what he thought of the SI in the centre of the table. His response was… what SI.

The stone itself was lovely in every respect, perfectly cut, nice colour extremely clean except for one large black carbon inclusion slap bang in the middle of the table, so obvious the loupe was not needed to view and once it was pointed out he could see it clearly.

Natural diamonds are a magic from nature so I can appreciate an included stone for other reasons. It is not necessarily a fault or a flaw, it is nature. But this gentleman did not know what he was buying and he got what he paid for.

The stone was a “great bargain” for a reason… no one in the trade wanted it. Armed with what he thought was a good range of 4 c’s he bought what was a very expensive diamond and based his buying decision solely on price, the cheapest option within the parameters of colour, cut, carat weight and clarity he was happy with.

After researching on Google and reading lots of threads he assumed buying an SI1 GIA diamond would be perfect. Mine are! But that is because I study hundreds of stones each month, I regularly pass on diamonds with much higher clarity grades even flawless stones as some other element may not be what I like, I select and preselect the finest diamonds for my clients, I know what to look for after almost 20 years of looking through the loupe! Unfortunately this client has no recourse with the site he bought the diamond, again he got what he paid for and was not miss sold anything.

Lots of sites list 1000’s of diamonds with fancy filters which you can slide up and down and select your preferred criteria, in fact I am even thinking of putting one on my site (IDK I may delete later!) but in reality the inventory on most of these sites hasn’t been studied it is simply uploaded from an excel spreadsheet. In fact the majority of these sites have never even seen the diamonds they are selling. Its a numbers game only, impressively one of these sites turns over $500 million dollars a year!

The majority of the diamonds on these sites are diamonds I do not want or would show to any serious client. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this but I take a different approach. I go through each diamond and critique its pros and cons, I study it in different lighting conditions, I think about what design would best emphasise its unique characteristics to find my clients the perfect diamond at the perfect price and then create the perfect engagement ring.

So thats my January rant over I hope you enjoyed it! Wishing you all a fab 2020. As always I am here to advise and create beautiful engagement rings with diamonds I have personally selected and studied, I work with the best in the business in Ireland and globally so do not hesitate to drop me a line if you are looking for a special diamond.

Take a moment to appreciate this GIA SI2 its much nicer than the the GIA SI1 the poor chap in the story above bought! Video below

Bespoke Emerald & Trillion Diamond Engagement Ring

Exquisite GIA Emerald Cut Diamond by Ronan Campbell at DESIGNYARD

When I met a recent couple to discuss an engagement ring design the lady was immediately drawn to one of my other designs which features a GIA Certified light green radiant cut diamond, in an unusual combination of green gold and platinum.

She loved the understated but unique style of the piece. We discussed potential centre diamonds as a green diamond was not her preference. Quickly we moved on to Emerald Cut diamonds which are one of my favourites. I currently have a beautiful 2.52ct Emerald cut diamond available here.

Basing my new design on my original green diamond engagement ring we chose a stunning GIA Certified Emerald Cut as the main diamond, rectangular in shape with crisp beautiful clean lines.

Bezel setting is a unique skill tricky to execute to perfection.
We set a gorgeous tiny diamond in the wall of this engagement ring

Trillion shape diamonds make a great side stone option and add a beautiful shape to the design. We love experimenting with lots of different types of side stones from shields, caddy’s or unique custom cut stones.

The end result is a unique engagement ring, designed in collaboration with the client. I love going through this process with clients as the end result is totally unique to them, the engagement ring is such a special piece of jewellery so it deserves a little more time and consideration. It does take a little bit of patience as with all hand made pieces, but it is always worth the wait!

DESIGNYARD on South Frederick St Dublin 2 recently welcomed Abby Mosseri for their Spot Light Series, which showcases work by contemporary art jewellery makers. DESIGNYARD is the home of Europe’s most progressive contemporary Art Jewellers, Artists & Sculptors.

The evening was a wonderful way for DESIGNYARD’s Irish based clients to meet Abby who is based in Sussex UK in person and get to know a little bit more about how Abby approaches creating her ‘”Modern Treasures”.

Sketching ideas

It starts sometimes with stones I find and just know they will work perfectly together, other times it starts with a sketch of an engagement ring and then I go find the right stones. When I can’t find the right stones I have them custom cut.

Custom cut caddy shape diamonds

This project started off with a beautiful sapphire, I then had two caddy shape diamonds custom cut as I had the design finalised in my head.

Two shanks is better than one… sometimes.

This design concept was developed with one of my goldsmiths after sitting down and shooting the breeze about what we could do to make a ridiculously cool ring.

assembly

I used platinum for this design as I love the weight and feeling it gives to the wearer. It is a wonderful metal very malleable so great for unique designs.

The flared shoulders sweep out and around the custom caddy cut diamonds which are very impactful and so unique. The shanks both join half way down and split again around the back making this a substantial ring on the finger.

precision and skill is required to set

I love how the sides of this ring turned out, the caddy’s are wider than most side stones you will typically see on engagement rings which make the over all results look very impressive and unique.

When designing rings for clients, they often have an idea of what they want which can be a great help but what I try to do is explore how to improve designs and create something totally unique by hand. While simple and elegant has its place and I also make rings like that I try where and when possible to create something that truly matches a clients personality. My clients come on a journey with me through this process and the end result is something much more special than an off the shelf ring you can pick up in any high street store often mass produced by machine with little heart and soul or quality.

21+ years of doing this gives me a confidence that no design is impossible, so I am going to challenge anyone reading this to get in touch with me and see what we can make together, it will be interesting, it will be a learning experience, it will be fun but most importantly it will be UNIQUE!

Top Picks & Predictions: Chrisite’s Magnificent Jewels 12th November Geneva

7ct Emerald Fancy Deep Blue Diamond Ring by Moussaieff

My Top 5 selections from Christie’s Magnificent Jewels Auction taking place in Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues Geneva on the 12th November 2019, although the top lot is included selections below are my personal choices and not necessarily by value.

A fascinating selection of gems and jewellery from some of the Top Jewellery Houses around the world is on offer from Christie’s next month in Geneva, pieces from Graff, Tiffany, Cartier, Harry Winston, JAR, Schlumberger, Tiffany and Van Cleef & Arpels to name just a few.

1. Moussaieff 7.03ct Fancy Deep Blue Emerald Cut Diamond

7ct Emerald Fancy Deep Blue Diamond Ring by Moussaieff

A very impressive blue diamond ring by Moussaieff with an auction estimate of CHF 10,000,000 – CHF 14,000,000. As we have seen in the past diamonds of this quality and colour and clarity grade can achieve very high prices, I am going to put my neck on the line here and estimate this could go for at least CHF 17,000,000. I will be watching closely!

7.03ct Fancy Deep Blue Emerald Cut Diamond GIA Report

2. Cartier Exceptional Sapphire & Diamond Brooch

39.19ct Octagonal step-cut sapphire & Diamond Brooch by Cartier

A remarkable Royal Blue Ceylon sapphire is centre stage in this brooch framed perfectly by rectangle and round diamonds by Cartier. This piece is accompanied with reports by AGL, Gübelin & SSEF all 2019 which indicate the absence of any treatments. Auction estimate CHF 500,000 – CHF 700,000 it could achieve considerably more.

3. 10.01ct D Colour Internally Flawless Emerald Cut Diamond Ring

10.01ct D Colour Internally Flawless Emerald Cut Diamond Ring

As a fan of the emerald cut and other step cuts my heart skipped a beat when I spotted this rare beauty. A type IIa diamond is the purest type of diamond devoid of traces of nitrogen or boron. The diamond is set in a simple, elegant setting which could easily be changed if the new owner wanted to make this diamond into a show stopping piece. Auction estimate is CHF 700,000 – CHF 900,000 Which is about right I can see this stone selling for CHF 800,000

10.01ct D Colour Internally Flawless Emerald Cut Diamond Ring

4. JAR Emerald & Diamond Bow Ring

JAR Jewellery are known for the most exquisite pieces. Joel Arthur Rosenthal (JAR) pieces are so sought after he will not sell you a piece unless he feels it matches you perfectly. This stunning Emerald & Diamond Bow Ring is sure to create a stir when the bidding starts. The opportunity to acquire a JAR piece at auction always piques the interest of avid collectors. Based in Place Vendôme Paris creating less than 100 pieces per year. There is no point in stopping by as there is not even a sign outside the door and you may only visit if your appointment has been accepted by Joel.

Auction Estimate CHF 100,000 – CHF 150,000 This piece is sure to reach the higher end estimate figure if not beyond.

5. Sterlé Enamel and Diamond Harlequin Brooch

Sterlé Enamel and Diamond Harlequin Brooch

I think it is the facial expression which drew me to this brooch, a subtle smirk and whimsical flow. From the 1960’s with French Marks circular cut diamonds with vibrant green and blue enamel. Estimate CHF 10,000 – CHF 15,000 I predict it will go for at least CHF 16,000 one of 20 Sterlé brooches on offer, the perfect chance to add to your collection.

Pierre Sterlé is credited for being able to manipulate metal unlike anyone before him, he was seen as an innovator in the jewellery world and enjoyed the support of many large jewellery houses & socialites. Achieving many accolades during his career it is no wonder his pieces especially his brooches continue to see strong demand at auction over 40 years after his death.

There are many more exquisite pieces coming up in this sale from different eras Belle Époque and Art Déco jewels, Sapphires from Kashmir, Rubies from Burma and Emeralds from Colombia this article is only a snap shot to the pieces which piqued my interest. As part of Christie’s Luxury Week which is five auctions including luxury watches, fine & rare wines culminating with the Magnificent Jewels Auction on the 12th of November.

asscher cut diamond engagement ring ronan campbell

Asscher Cut Diamond Engagement Rings

I love the Asscher cut, Asscher is a term in the trade given to what the GIA refer to as a Square Emerald Cut but there is much more to this shape.

This now iconic shape was created by Joseph Asscher in 1902. The cut shape was the first ever to be patented which prevented other diamond companies from replicating it. The style suited the sleek geometric shapes of the Art Deco era perfectly and proved hugely successful. The cuts clean lines and arrangements of facets create a ‘hall of mirrors’ effect, generally more suited to higher clarity diamonds as there are less places for inclusions and imperfections to hide.

2.01ct Square Emerald Cut

As a solitaire engagement ring the shape holds enough character to be perfectly interesting, it can be understated and elegant but on closer inspection can be as dramatic as a kaleidoscope bouncing around all of the colours of the spectrum of light. There are many more ‘facets’ to the story of the Asscher cut such as ‘cut cornered square emerald cuts’ or ‘square emerald cuts’ being referred to incorrectly as Asscher cuts. To the general public this is often over looked but to a diamond geek like me this is fascinating.

I was fortunate enough to have the pleasure of meeting with brother and sister Mike & Lita Asscher of The Royal Asscher Family in London a number of years ago. They explained the rich history of their family’s diamond business and the differences between what the general public consider an Asscher but which generally tends to be a square emerald cut or cut cornered square emerald cut. A true “Royal Asscher Cut” is only cut by The Royal Asscher family and comes with a separate certificate which refers to its lazer inscribed individual number and logo. All square step cuts are beautiful and unique, different finishes will appeal to different people. the ‘Royal Asscher Cut” has been updated since its original iteration of Joseph Asscher to create a maximum play of light, some may find it creates to much sparkle, others may prefer the other versions of which there are many.
